Can local bridges span funding gap?

(See list of the worst bridges at bottom)

WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- Kevin Brunner is worried that local bridge maintenance keeps getting pushed further and further down the road.

As the county’s public works head, Brunner is acutely aware of the more than a dozen bridges in the county that are labeled as structurally deficient or functionally obsolete by the state Department of Transportation.

WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY --  Perhaps there is no greater sense of accomplishment than serving the community in which you live. For James Langnes III, a junior finance major at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, service has been a way of life. Separating James from his peers perhaps, is his age -- 19.

Langnes was born in Covington, Louisiana. His family would make multiple moves back to the Badger state, including a stint living in Darien until first grade and then most recently moving back to the area in 2012.

WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- On any given Sunday, the Rev. Simone Nathan, pastor of the Good Earth Church of the Divine, might be found blessing the waters at the shorelines of Lauderdale Lakes, offering prayers for a fruitful harvest in a neighborhood orchard or giving a sermon at a weekly worship service in the sunlit upper level of an upscale barn at Michael Fields Agricultural Institute in East Troy.

The combination of theology and ecology that forms the Good Earth Church, an ecumenical interfaith community, is what Nathan calls planting a bit of heaven on earth.

WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- Hobbies exist in all shapes and sizes. Some are small and historical such as coin collecting, others are large and comforting like quilt making. There is one activity however, that evokes the pursuit of a passionate dream -- the ability to fly.

When you can’t sprout wings and take to the skies on your own, you might find yourself in the company of radio-controlled aircraft enthusiasts. The Academy of Model Aeronautics claims more than 2,500 charter model airplane clubs in the United States, including the Silver Eagles RC Club in Walworth County.

WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- In the weeks after her daughter Avery, an ebullient fifth-grader at Delavan Christian School, was killed in a car crash in fall 2012, Bridget McCarthy would find herself awake in the middle of the night. Unable to sleep, she’d often turn to Facebook or her blog, Stumbling Towards Perfect, and read comments from people who were thinking about her and wanted to let her know.

“Social media saved me when Avery died,” McCarthy said.

WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- At 112 years old, every inch of the 17-foot-tall Birge Fountain in Whitewater looks like what you’d imagine an imposing turn-of-the-last century sculpture to be: cherubs astride undulating dolphins, a Greek maiden-dubbed “Maid of the Mist” holding a water jar and Classical Revival-style detailing.

It’s hard to believe it was assembled from a catalog.

ELKHORN -- A Delavan man has been arrested following an attempted robbery Tuesday morning, July 7, 2015, at the Pharmacy Station in Elkhorn.

WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- Red beets and green lettuce, tart cherries and sweet peas -- they all sprout from the soil each Wisconsin summer.

As myriad the varieties of plants, so too are the reasons that small-scale farmers and growers work the soil and share the bounty at local markets.

WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- He’s put on plenty of miles in 20 years of "My Classic Car," and TV host Dennis Gage is ready to put on a few more as he cruises into Delavan for the 12th annual Cars Time Forgot show.
