BELOIT -- A group of Beloit residents is stepping up to promote peace in their city and will host the Stateline Peace Rally from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 14, 2016 at the Harry Moore Pavilion in Beloit's Riverside Park.
WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- There are stories in Geneva Lake. Some are fascinating, others a little creepy.
Ask Dan Johnson, owner of Loves Park Scuba, an Illinois diving school, and the Lockwood Pioneer Scuba Diving Museum. Johnson has been diving in Geneva Lake since 1974, systematically covering most of the shoreline in search of antique bottles -- of which he’s found dozens.
WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- Tristan Crist was about 6 years old when he began exploring the world of magic and illusion.
“My grandfather showed me a card trick, and that was the start,” Crist said. “My parents got me a magic kit for Christmas, and I learned all these tricks. I went to the library, and there were a lot of magic books in the library.
JANESVILLE MESSENGER -- One late April evening in 1874, two men walking along the banks of the Rock River in Janesville near the Monterey Dam noticed a 6-foot-long mud-colored, stationary mass jutting up from the water’s surface.
One of the men got into a rowboat and drew near to the object. When he hit it with an oar, the mass lifted a scaly head out of the water, small eyes flashing. It snapped its long, toothy jaws a couple of times before it disappeared into the river.
WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- Local historian, author and former archivist Patrick Quinn not only is steeped in the history of Lake Geneva and the states of Wisconsin and Illinois, he’s been part of history’s fabric himself, including a march for civil rights in Selma, Alabama, during the tumultuous 1960s.
History is part of his genealogy; Abraham Lincoln used to drink at Quinn’s great-great grandfather’s tavern in Greenview, Illinois, just west of Springfield.
