WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- Besides the scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausages, cheese and even ice cream being served at the 41st annual Walworth County Dairy Breakfast in Elkhorn on June 17, visitors also will get a slice of farm life.
Traditionally, dairy breakfast-goers are treated to a look behind the scenes of a local host family farm. This year they’ll be able to catch shuttle buses from the Walworth County Fairgrounds to Sterken Farms near Delavan for tours of both a dairy farm and a newer agribusiness.
WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- Here in the Midwest we tend to take our farms for granted, surrounded as we are by the red barns of earlier generations.
Your great-grandparents knew exactly where their food came from. Even 150 years ago, 90 percent of the population grew nearly all of its food. Today, only 2 percent does.
JANESVILLE MESSENGER -- Emily Johnson couldn’t bear to hear her dad had decided to sell the Farmall 300. The tractor had been bought by her great-grandfather, who started a farm near Orfordville in 1936. It was sold to her grandpa and later her dad, who both had ridden it through those same farm fields.
So she bought it.
STATELINE NEWS -- “We have not come close yet to finding the perfect soybean because perfection is not achievable, but every year we try to get as close as possible.”
That has been Bill Campbell’s philosophy since joining Dairyland Seed Co. as a cross-breeder/germinator on Nov. 1, 1972.
He has worked with corn and alfalfa, but Campbell has concentrated his energy and efforts on soybeans since 1984.
