Lustron homes, made of square enameled steel panels — known as Lustron for its “luster on steel” — were the brainchild of Illinois inventor Carl Strandlund.
WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- Few things in life are original anymore. The cellphone seems to be moving to our wrist, which would make wearing a watch back in vogue. Movies seem to relive the heroes of our past (or at least our parents). There is, however, an artist in Lake Geneva who infuses his own style into familiar songs, making them livelier and new again.
Dan Trudell has been playing the piano during all of this century and in the latter half of the one before that.
WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- More resources means more opportunities and that means more young people are starting their own businesses.
Young entrepreneurs are getting their feet wet at “break-neck speed,” according to David Gee of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Gee is a lecturer in entrepreneurship and the co-director of the UW-Whitewater Launch Pad program, which helps UW-Whitewater undergraduates and graduate students launch startup businesses.
The Meat Animal Sale is held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 4, 2015. The Sale of Champions follows at 3 p.m. in the Wiswell Center.
WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- Music, food, carnival rides and a little bit of history are some of the things that will be featured during this year’s Venetian Festival, set for Wednesday, Aug. 19, through Sunday, Aug. 23.
The festival, hosted by the Lake Geneva Jaycees, will be held from 5 p.m. to midnight Wednesday through Friday and from noon to midnight Saturday and Sunday. Some of the highlights include the water ski show, craft fair, beer tent, bags tournament, brat tent and fireworks display. Live music will be provided by Bella Cain, Cherry Pie, The Love Monkeys, Fresh Hops Band, The Acoustic Generation, Too White Crew, Lake Geneva House of Music and Christopher’s Project.
WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- In the weeks after her daughter Avery, an ebullient fifth-grader at Delavan Christian School, was killed in a car crash in fall 2012, Bridget McCarthy would find herself awake in the middle of the night. Unable to sleep, she’d often turn to Facebook or her blog, Stumbling Towards Perfect, and read comments from people who were thinking about her and wanted to let her know.
“Social media saved me when Avery died,” McCarthy said.
WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- At 112 years old, every inch of the 17-foot-tall Birge Fountain in Whitewater looks like what you’d imagine an imposing turn-of-the-last century sculpture to be: cherubs astride undulating dolphins, a Greek maiden-dubbed “Maid of the Mist” holding a water jar and Classical Revival-style detailing.
It’s hard to believe it was assembled from a catalog.
WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- Red beets and green lettuce, tart cherries and sweet peas -- they all sprout from the soil each Wisconsin summer.
As myriad the varieties of plants, so too are the reasons that small-scale farmers and growers work the soil and share the bounty at local markets.
