JANESVILLE -- Rep. Paul Ryan, after a week at home in Janesville with his family mulling a call from Republicans to run for speaker, gave his party an ultimatum.
During a widely reported closed door meeting today, Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2015, with members of the House Republican Conference, Ryan said he needs to know by Friday if all 247 members would support his bid for speaker.
JANESVILLE -- Active shooter incidents, such as the one that recently occurred at an Oregon community college, are becoming more common. That frightful reality is driving a new proactive training effort in Janesville.
The memories came flooding back as my brother and I examined the 65-year-old Allis-Chalmers WD farm tractor on display at the Rock River Thresheree.

NEWARK TOWNSHIP -- Never underestimate the power of a volunteer.
For nearly two decades, countless visitors, from seniors to school groups, have toured the grounds of the 50-acre park to see what Friends of Beckman Mill volunteers have wrought, including an 1840s-era cooperage, a dam and mill pond, a fish ladder, a foot bridge, saw mill display, blacksmith shop, nature trails -- and the crown jewel, an authentically restored 1868 grist mill.
On Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 26, 2015 and Sept. 27, 2015, the Friends of Beckman Mill will mark its 25th anniversary with a celebration in Beckman Mill Park, located six miles west of Beloit and planted in the footprint of a mill that’s almost a century and a half old.
