WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- Diane and Michael Michalek lost their 22-year-old daughter, Alyssa, to suicide about four years ago. Now the Delavan couple has helped organize a walk in her memory to help others who have lost a loved one to suicide or people who are struggling with thoughts of suicide.
The Walworth County Out of the Darkness Suicide Prevention and Awareness Walk will be held Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Walworth County Fairgrounds in Elkhorn. Registration begins at 8 a.m., an opening ceremony with a balloon release will be at 9 a.m. and the walk begins at 9:30 a.m. People also can register for the two-mile walk by going online to afsp.org/walk.
DELAVAN -- It is 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 30, and a large cargo van is pulling into the parking lot at Veterans Park in Delavan. Near the rear doors, simple magnetic signs proclaim the van’s mission: "Delavan-Darien Bookmobile -- Let’s Read," with a bespectacled green bookworm propped against a stack of books doing just that.
WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- In the weeks after her daughter Avery, an ebullient fifth-grader at Delavan Christian School, was killed in a car crash in fall 2012, Bridget McCarthy would find herself awake in the middle of the night. Unable to sleep, she’d often turn to Facebook or her blog, Stumbling Towards Perfect, and read comments from people who were thinking about her and wanted to let her know.
“Social media saved me when Avery died,” McCarthy said.

WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- At 112 years old, every inch of the 17-foot-tall Birge Fountain in Whitewater looks like what you’d imagine an imposing turn-of-the-last century sculpture to be: cherubs astride undulating dolphins, a Greek maiden-dubbed “Maid of the Mist” holding a water jar and Classical Revival-style detailing.
It’s hard to believe it was assembled from a catalog.
WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- Red beets and green lettuce, tart cherries and sweet peas -- they all sprout from the soil each Wisconsin summer.
As myriad the varieties of plants, so too are the reasons that small-scale farmers and growers work the soil and share the bounty at local markets.
WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- He’s put on plenty of miles in 20 years of "My Classic Car," and TV host Dennis Gage is ready to put on a few more as he cruises into Delavan for the 12th annual Cars Time Forgot show.
