BELOIT TOWNSHIP -- Two years ago, F.J. Turner High’s softball program took three sets of sisters with it to the WIAA state softball tournament.

The older siblings were all seniors, the younger siblings all freshmen.

And when the Trojans’ run ended in a Division 2 semifinal loss, many believed Turner would be back when the young sisters, themselves, reached their senior seasons.

There was only one problem. The Trojans weren’t all that interested in waiting that long.

Anticipation for March Madness is reaching a fever pitch as Stateline area teams gear up for the WIAA boys basketball postseason, which culminates March 17-19 at the Kohl Center in Madison from Thursday through Saturday.

Regional action begins Tuesday, March 1, for schools not receiving first-round byes, while everybody joins the fray on Friday and Saturday, March 4-5.

Sectionals in all five divisions are scheduled Thursday and Saturday, March 10 and March 12.

BELOIT -- While police continued their search last week for the killer of a 5-year-old town of Beloit boy, the community grappled with the shocking and senseless killing.

Austin Ramos Jr. was shot and killed about 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22, 2016 near the intersection of Prairie Avenue and Shopiere Road in Beloit, according to interim Police Chief Dave Zibolski.

A gunman pulled alongside the car Austin's father was driving and opened fire, striking Austin in the abdomen while he sat strapped into his car seat.

Another Wisconsin high school football season is upon us, with the bulk of teams across the Badger State kicking off Friday night.

That’s the case with every Stateline area squad, except for Williams Bay, which is scheduled to open Saturday.

Here is a rundown of Week One’s match-ups, most of them nonconference affairs except for Janesville Parker and Janesville Craig starting Big Eight competition.

Derek Diehl inherits a Turner program that has not won more than two games since 2008, and the former Williams Bay coach is hoping that senior quarterback Seth Smith and the Trojans’ offense can reach double figures more than three times like last year.
