Beloit youth see advocacy pay off with new vaping ordinance
To the editor, As a member of FACT, a statewide youth tobacco prevention movement, and Youth2Youth 4 Change, I would like to thank the city council members and city manager of Beloit for passing a comprehensive vaping ordinance.
Myself and four other FACT members worked hard on educating the city leaders about the dangers of vaping and what we were seeing in our schools and the community. We were impressed with the way the leaders listened to us, respected us and made us partners in making this ordinance a reality for the city we live in.
In the past four years e-cigarette use has skyrocketed, with an increase of 272 percent among middle school youth and 154 percent among high school students. This is a reality I see daily and it concerns me greatly that my friends think there is no danger to vaping, especially with the number of young people going to the hospital with lung complications and the deaths (that have occurred).
Myself and the others who worked to help pass this ordinance in the city of Beloit hope that this kind of movement will help our friends see these products are dangerous.
We believe that by the city of Beloit passing this ordinance, it truly will make a difference for many generations to come.
