Common sense, respect lacking in our culture

Written by  Staff Writer
To the editor,
Our president and other far right-wing politicians have declared war on brown and black people, and to some extent also have declared war on white people who are poor and middle class. They seem only concerned about white people who are the 1 percent.
These politicians have opened the door wide for the white nationalist movement and their greed and hate and their politics of exclusion. They want us to feel divided, and they spread fear and distrust. Our president’s tweets do little to make us feel comfortable and secure.

Too many have become comfortable with a president who insults people and brags about being “the chosen one.”

Then there is U.S. Rep. Steve King, who has publicly stated, “Immigrants will never make America great again.”

There are politicians who have stated, “Media is the enemy of the people.” This is an irresponsible statement being made by adults who should know better, but they don’t seem to care.

Then there are the climate deniers, the Holocaust deniers and we even have adults who deny the school shootings. What has happened to common sense and our sense of decency and respect? I hear too many people expressing anti-education and anti-science thoughts. We treat undocumented immigrants like they are subhuman. Too many politicians have sold their souls to the lobbyists.

Many Christians also present themselves as being confused and misled as they practice politics rather than practicing Christian principles. Are there any adults in the room? Isn’t there something more important than just money and politics?
