BELOIT — Welty Environmental Center will host a free talk, “The Rock River Rediscovered: From Pristine to Ruin to Recovery —A Positive Environmental Story,” at 2 p.m. Sunday April 28, at 1201 Big Hill Court.

Local environmentalist Dave Bendlin will talk about the prehistory of the river and the settlement of the region by indigenous Native Americans, culminating with the arrival of European settlers.

The talk will track the industrialization of the riverfront, including the increase of environmental challenges as the river was used for waste disposal. Growing awareness of the waterway as a community asset in the late 20th century led to cleanup and restoration efforts, which continue today by a variety of local groups.

The Beloit College Archives has provided historical imagery that will help tell the story of the river’s evolution.
