Cranberry-filled Turnovers

Written by  Staff Writer

The flaky goodness of a homemade turnover can't be found in just any pastry purchase. If you don't want to run to the local bake shop for turnovers, try this cranberry turnover recipe; these delicious turnovers are sure to be a hit!

1/2 cup soft shortening
1 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 can jellied cranberry sauce
milk or light cream
sugar for sprinkling

Mix thoroughly shortening, sugar, eggs and vanilla. Blend in flour, salt and soda. Cover; chill one hour. Prepare the filling.

Heat oven to 400 degrees. Roll dough out to 1/16-inch thick on a lightly floured surface. Cut into 3-inch circles, squares or scallops. Spoon 1 teaspoon of filling on half of each circle. Fold dough over filling; press edges together.

Place 1 inch apart on ungreased baking sheet. Brush with milk; sprinkle with sugar. Bake eight to 10 minutes or until very light brown. Immediately remove from baking sheet.

Makes about 4 1/2 dozen cookies.
