Community effort feeds local families

Written by  Staff Writer

To the editor,
On Dec. 16, many in the community turned out to help students in Janesville through our Delivering Bags of Hope food delivery event. The goal was to provide 350 families and 50 senior citizens much-needed food and groceries over the holiday season and we surpassed that goal. The event was a great success and we hope everyone was inspired and filled with hope as much as we were.

Delivering Bags of Hope thanks our community partners, Dollar General, Festival Foods, Seneca and the city of Janesville. Their donations of facilities, groceries and time were invaluable. We also thank Lamar Advertising for the extended billboard displays around the city; Blackhawk Community Credit Union for their continued donations and volunteers for our event; Rock Around the Block LLC; Barkley’s Burgers, Brews and Dawgs; Gray’s Brewing, Alpha Baking; Rock County Dairy Council/Country Quality Dairy; Tim and Barb Cullen; Kwik Trip; SSM Health; and the Janesville Jets/Oakleigh and Tobin Ryan for their donations and support. A very special thank you goes out to our School District of Janesville employees and students. Staff and students participated in fundraisers and assisted in the planning and organization of our event.

None of this would be possible without the members of our Bags of Hope planning committee, who contribute financially and through their preparation for the event.

Finally, we thank the adult and student volunteers from across the school district and the Janesville community who turned out on that day to move the groceries from pallets to bags and finally into the homes of all of the deserving families. As we begin the planning for the 2018 event, we hope everyone will join us again. We couldn’t do it without you.

Steve Pophal, superintendent
School District of Janesville
