Thousands gathered Wednesday at the Capitol steps in Madison for a Tax Day Tea Party. The rally was one of hundreds across the country to protest escalating taxes and government spending.
According to organizer Mark Block, director of the Wisconsin chapter of Americans for Prosperity, unofficial estimates placed the crowd size at more than 8,000 people — some 3,000 more than expected.
“We didn’t expect that kind of turnout,” Block said. “It’s incredible. They’re saying it’s the largest rally in Madison since the 1960s anti-war movement.”

The “tea parties” are a reference to the Boston Tea Party tax revolt prior to the American Revolution.
