Growing number of fans await a Photo A Day DARIEN -- CSI Media photographer Terry Mayer has a growing following, both in print and online, for his Photo A Day series that he began January 1. Other photographers have undertaken similar projects over the years, Mayer says, but with the growth of websites and social media that make it easy to publish his work, Mayer decided begin his project with the New Year. Each day, Mayer shoots and posts a photo online. Some photos come from assignments he does for print stories, others he does on his own time. (Continue below) "I wanted to challenge myself," he said. Mayer hasn't missed a day this year, including one day when he was home sick in bed and another in which he photographed touching visual tribute to his grandfather and grandmother shortly after his grandmother passed away. The value of the daily photographs has proven itself across all of CSI Media's publishing platforms. They are regularly featured in print in the Sunday weeklies, including the Walworth County Sunday News, The Stateline News and the Janesville Messenger. Photo galleries also are prominent on CommunityShoppers.com, as well as WalworthCountyToday.com, the joint web project between CSI Media and the Gazette. The true power of the images have been measured on each of the weekly newspapers' companion Facebook brand pages, where photos are posted as well. The photo project easily is the biggest driver of traffic to those pages, which in turn directs readers to the electronic editions of the printed products. Dozens of readers like and comment on the postings daily, which also provides a useful direct connection with readers that often can be used when reporting stories. With the end of the year around the corner, readers have been clamoring for the project to continue into the next year. Mayer says he likely will continue just to see how long he can keep the project going.
