Learning the lessons of Sept. 11

Editorial Post

From the September 12, 2010 CSI Walworth County Sunday "The Way we see it" column:

For years now, we’ve written a version of this editorial around the time of the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The message bears repeating, but also must evolve, given President Obama’s feckless approach to prosecuting the war on terror.

Clearly, life for most Americans — the recession notwithstanding — seems relatively normal, even as our military continues the fight against Islamist warmongers. There are signs of the conflict here and there, particularly in communities where soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines return home from Iraq and Afghanistan. But for most of us, life is much like it was on Sept. 10, 2001.

The growing American divide

Editorial Post

From the September 5, 2010 CSI Walworth County Sunday "The Way we see it" column:

As fears grow that the economy is sputtering into a double-dip recession, it has become all but impossible to overstate the extent of the disconnect that now exists between the public and private sectors.

While the latter remains crippled by high unemployment, tight credit, onerous taxation and consumer belt-tightening, the former feasts happily on its stimulus sop and the fruits of myriad, unrelenting tax hikes.

President ignored fallout of drilling ban

Editorial Post

From the August 29, 2010 CSI Walworth County Sunday "The Way we see it" column:

When senior Obama administration officials concluded in June that a federal moratorium on deepwater oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico would eliminate 23,000 jobs — as news reports now indicate — and then recommended it anyway, they opened another window into the icy soul of a preening presidency.

It is telling that President Obama quickly signed off on a job-killing drilling ban at a time when millions of private-sector families are experiencing daily hardships related to joblessness, under-employment and pay cuts. The president blames his predecessor for all that ails the economy, but in this case, Barack Obama is the one who presumably deliberated, and then made 23,000 jobs disappear.

From the August 22, 2010 CSI Walworth County Sunday "The Way we see it" column:

As Brett Favre once again retires from retirement — or so it seemed this past week at least — and young players once again collide on crowded local practice fields, we are reminded that another exciting football season is about to get under way.

Happy days!

Editorial Post

From the August 15, 2010 CSI Walworth County Sunday "The Way we see it" column:

We read with amusement last week that the federal government’s top environmental cop, EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson, actually traveled to Milwaukee to talk to local officials about their “innovative water policies.”

It’s certainly possible this was a useful trip for everyone involved. Then again, it’s also possible Michelle Obama has useful advice on planning a budget-conscious “stay-cation.”

This war -- is won?

Editorial Post

From the August 8, 2010 CSI Walworth County Sunday "The Way we see it" column:

This week’s gold medal for political gall goes to a repeat winner — the commander-in-chief himself, who continues to be deeply impressed by his ability to spearhead the Big Win in Iraq.

Sounding a bit like his warmongering predecessor — although we’re sure that Mr. Bush knows the “p” in “corpsman” is silent — President Obama declared mission accomplished in Iraq Monday in a speech at the Disabled American Veterans national convention in Atlanta.
