The Red Cross will help Walworth County residents affected by last week’s heavy rains and flooding by opening a Multi-Agency Response Center Friday, July 21, from noon to 7 p.m. at the Walworth County Department of Health and Human Services building, W4051 County Highway NN in Elkhorn.

Agencies such as the Red Cross and Samaritan’s Purse will be available to provide resources and help with cleanup.

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater is offering Financial Front, a free financial planning session for veterans and their families this fall. Participants will be asked to attend a large-group orientation on one of three dates:  Tuesday, Sept. 19, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.; Wednesday, Sept. 27, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.;  or Thursday, Oct. 5, from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.  They will then be matched with a financial advisor from their region for a one-on-one appointment.

WC Food Pantry slated to close

A longtime food pantry in Walworth County is slated to close its doors at the end of October unless someone steps forward to manage it, according to a release from the Walworth County Resource Center.

After serving the Walworth County community for eight years, the Walworth County Food Pantry will close its doors on October 29, 2017.

Jim and Ardith Drescher, along with a steady group of volunteers, say they have been serving 50 or more families twice a week, every week since 2009.

Recent surface water testing by the Rock County Public Health Department has indicated high levels of E. Coli bacteria in the Yahara River and the Rock River from Indianford to Beloit, according to a release from the Rock County Public Health Department.

The July 12 testing found high E. Coli levels in the Yahara River at Stebbinsville and Murwin Park in Fulton, and the Rock River at Traxler Park in Janesville and Preservation Park in the town of Beloit.

WHITEWATER—A local group hand delivered letters to Gov. Scott Walker and state legislators asking for support to get an environmental impact study on U.S. Highway 12, according to a release from the Redline Coalition.

The coalition is made up of the Greater Whitewater Committee, Inc., Walworth County, the City of Whitewater, Township of La Grange, City of Elkhorn, Lauderdale Lake and Pleasant Lake Management Districts and Walworth County Economic and Development Alliance (WCEDA).
