Mr. Conservation

Written by

JANESVILLE MESSENGER -- “Gratifying” and “thankful” are the words Richard Newsome uses to describe being recognized for his conservation efforts during the past 40-plus years.

The Rock County Conservationists recently dedicated the Richard Newsome Education Garden at the Welty Environmental Center, located in Big Hill Park in the town of Beloit.

“If there was going to be something that had my name on it, I can’t think of anything I appreciate more than this prairie garden,” Newsome said.

Bring a chair to the square for bluegrass

Written by

WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY — If you’re a fan of bluegrass, you know exactly where you’ll be come Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 9 and Sept. 10: listening to the sweet blend of guitars, banjos, mandolins and fiddles at East Troy’s 24th annual Bluegrass Festival. Take a moment while you’re there to stop and thank the woman behind the festival — she’ll be mingling with bluegrass lovers on the square — award-winning composer Melissa Sherman.

In 1994, Sherman was a single mom with three young children and a business, Melissa’s Country Baskets and a Touch of Heart, located across from the village square in East Troy. She was also a bluegrass guitarist and upright bass player looking to play, but busy with life.

Clinton man masters his craft

Written by

STATELINE NEWS — Gerry Lesch has traveled to all seven continents and carved items out of native wood while visiting six of them.

The exception was his 2009 trip to Antarctica, which doesn’t allow defacing of anything. So, he made do with what he could find, notching an owl out of a bar of soap in three minutes while departing on an old icebreaking ship. Lesch gave it to a Russian couple who had just gotten engaged.

Next summer he plans to visit Iceland and Greenland. But currently his attention is concentrated on Rock County, because he will be the featured carver — for a second time — at the 12th annual Rock River Valley Carvers show, which is scheduled Saturday, Sept. 9, at the Rock County Fairgrounds.
