WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- Local historian, author and former archivist Patrick Quinn not only is steeped in the history of Lake Geneva and the states of Wisconsin and Illinois, he’s been part of history’s fabric himself, including a march for civil rights in Selma, Alabama, during the tumultuous 1960s.

History is part of his genealogy; Abraham Lincoln used to drink at Quinn’s great-great grandfather’s tavern in Greenview, Illinois, just west of Springfield.

WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY --  If you’ve been looking past the couch lately for your lost New Year's resolution about getting in shape, you’re not alone. According a study from the University of Scranton Journal of Clinical Psychology, only one in 10 resolution-making souls achieve their goals by Feb. 1, if at all. One of your best bets for braving the outdoors while getting some exercise may be a bicycle.

MESSENGER -- A lifelong reader, Ethel Himmel now shares her love of books with fellow mystery buffs through monthly meetings of the Mystery Book Club she began at the Milton Public Library.

Since 2002, participants have pored over more than 145 mysteries ranging from popular favorites like Stieg Larsson’s “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” to classics like Agatha Christie’s “Death on the Nile,” and authors that have included Michael Crichton, Dan Brown and Tony Hillerman.

The former deputy director of the La Crosse Public Library, Himmel is a semiretired library consultant at Himmel and Wilson, a firm she founded more than 20 years ago with her husband, Bill Wilson, who is a former Wisconsin state librarian.

WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- There was a time in Delavan when it wasn’t unusual to see elephants lumbering down Walworth Avenue or drinking from Lake Comus, or watch zebra grazing in pastures near High and Parish streets.

Exotic sights were common when nearly 30 circuses called Delavan their winter home in the mid- to late 19th century.
