Five tons of fun at the fair

Written by

WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY — The sound of trucks roaring and the sight of cars being crushed under heavy wheels will be just some of the highlights for this year’s Walworth County Fair, set to kick off Wednesday, Aug. 30, and run through Labor Day.

The All Star Monster Trucks show is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1, at the grandstand. The show will feature four monster trucks participating in three types of competitions — best trick, racing and freestyle.

Small horses, big impact

Written by

ELKHORN — Just ask any member of the Walworth County 4-H Driving Club and they will explain — you don’t have to go big to make a big impact. Many of the kids in the horse and pony project work with steeds that are one-fourth the size of a quarter horse or one-tenth the size of a Belgian or Percheron.

Size doesn’t matter when it comes to the level of commitment required for this project. Dedication does, and these kids have it, practicing three or more times a week in many cases.

The goal, of course, is to demonstrate what they’ve learned at the Walworth County Fair.

Cranking up their engines

Written by

EDGERTON — The Rock River Thresheree reunion will feature a variety of stories about antique equipment, but perhaps none more interesting than two engines that the Fairbanks-Morse Company manufactured in 1935.

The thresheree will be held Friday through Monday, Sept. 1 through Sept. 4, at Thresherman’s Park south of Edgerton.

It will feature two CV-6 gasoline engines that were aboard the Navy’s USS Enterprise during World War II. Both engines were transported from New York in time for the 61st annual celebration.

Language of opportunity

Written by

WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- Born in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, Lilly Barrett came to the United States as a child, so she understands firsthand the difficulties of learning a language while simultaneously navigating life in a new country.

That experience adds a compassionate dimension to her new job as coordinator of the Walworth County Literacy Council, where she assesses the needs of students and matches them to tutors.
