Carving out art for all

Kiddieland isn’t just for kids -- all ages will enjoy the skill of Dave Watson, the chainsaw artist, who carves fanciful shapes in logs of wood using a chainsaw as his delicate tool of choice. Watch him in action at 12:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m.,  12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Sunday as he finishes up his wood sculptures. At the end of the fair, an auction of the woodcarvings is held to benefit the Walworth County Fair Foundation. The auction is held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, on the Park Stage.

Check out this crop of locally grown talent

This year, the Lake Geneva House of Music will sponsor and coordinate a showcase of outstanding local talent on what’s been known as the Pepsi Stage.

Chris Buttleman, owner of the Lake Geneva House of Music, said he’s looking forward to showcasing some of his students and teachers on stage at the Walworth County Fair.

“We’ve got some great up and coming talent: Adia Fuller, Nick Brose, Claire Kelly and John Hainstock, to mention a few,” Buttleman said.

If you’re looking for some heart-pounding action during the fair, look no further than the bull riding, taking place at the grandstand at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 2. The Bulls-N-Barrels competition is free with your paid admission to the fair. Watch professional athletes compete in bull riding and barrel racing.

WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- Larry Gaffey plans to use his event promotion experience to help attract more people to the Walworth County Fair.

Gaffey was named the general manager of the Walworth County Fair earlier this year. He officially moved to Walworth County in May.

WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- Attendance at the Walworth County Fair harness races has dwindled over the decades, and some longtime racers fear the sport is on its last lap.

But as one of the state’s top harness racing venues, the Walworth County Fair is making a push to draw more fans to the track.

Holton heritage holds strong in Elkhorn

WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- It was 19th-century pioneer Col. Samuel Phoenix who, according to local history, gave Elkhorn its name after he spotted a pair of elk antlers hanging from a tree along an old army trail between Spring Prairie and Delavan.

But credit instrument maker Frank Holton and an entirely different kind of horn for really putting the city on the map -- and making a community presence that’s still felt today.

ELKHORN -- Larry and Rhonda Voss are selling their home and just about everything they own. They aren’t desperate for cash, but they are desperate to begin what they believe is a calling.

ELKHORN -- A Delavan man has been arrested following an attempted robbery Tuesday morning, July 7, 2015, at the Pharmacy Station in Elkhorn.

WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- Red beets and green lettuce, tart cherries and sweet peas -- they all sprout from the soil each Wisconsin summer.

As myriad the varieties of plants, so too are the reasons that small-scale farmers and growers work the soil and share the bounty at local markets.
