4-Hers Learn About life

STATELINE NEWS -- Olivia Runne’s recent trip to Finland served as inspiration for one of the 4-H projects she entered in this year’s Winnebago County Fair.

Runne, 17, of Rockford, visited Finland for about a month this summer as part of the 4-H Exchange Program. Runne’s project featured photographs that she took during her trip.

“I used a lot of the same photos that I took there, and I even brought some of the candies back here with me,” Runne said.

Runne traveled to the Scandinavian country with more than 20 other 4-H members from around the United States. She said they went hiking, enjoyed Finnish cuisine and visited tourist attractions, adding that it’s similar to the U.S.

But a stop-animation film made by Barker is an entry for this year’s Winnebago County Fair. Barker’s film depicts a penguin participating in a sled race. She said she developed the idea while participating in a video contest.

STATELINE NEWS -- The Winnebago County Fair begins Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2015 and runs through Sunday, Aug. 23, 2015 at the Winnebago County Fairgrounds in Pecatonica. Highlight activities for the fair include:
