BELOIT -- While police continued their search last week for the killer of a 5-year-old town of Beloit boy, the community grappled with the shocking and senseless killing.
Austin Ramos Jr. was shot and killed about 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22, 2016 near the intersection of Prairie Avenue and Shopiere Road in Beloit, according to interim Police Chief Dave Zibolski.
A gunman pulled alongside the car Austin's father was driving and opened fire, striking Austin in the abdomen while he sat strapped into his car seat.
BELOIT -- Winterfest is all about fun in the snow, with a dash of creativity. For about 20 years, the event has remained popular.
This year’s event, held Friday through Sunday, Jan. 29 through Jan. 31, will feature several new activities, including snowman building. Beloit Memorial High School students will work with children and their parents to help them create a snowman masterpiece. Residents should register ahead of time by calling 608-364-2890, ext. 1.
STATELINE NEWS -- A five-year-old Beloit boy was shot and killed about 7:10 p.m. tonight near the intersection of Prairie Avenue and Shopiere Road in Beloit.
The child was in the back seat of a car driven by his father when a gunman pulled up alongside and opened fire, according to interim Police Chief Dave Zibolski.
The father was uninjured and is assisting with the investigation.
The suspect vehicle is described as a maroon SUV.
Police are asking residents with any information on the shooting to contact police.

STATELINE NEWS -- The city of Beloit is surveying its oldest properties for consideration as historic landmarks, but a proposal making its way through the Wisconsin Legislature could derail those efforts.
City Planner Alex Morganroth said once a building has been designated as a landmark or historic district, it is eligible to be placed on the State Register of Historic Places and National Register of Historic Places and is protected by the city’s historic preservation ordinance, meaning any exterior alterations made to the building must be approved by city staff or the landmark commission.
