The Burlington Area School Board has put in motion three referendums for bond issue on the April 4, 2017 ballot.

The referendums apply to buildings and infrastructure. The state report cards rate the district "Exceeding Expectations," and locally administered assessment, known as Measures of Academic Progress, have all grade levels exceeding the national average. Burlington High School was one of 425 schools in the United States and Canada named to the Advanced Placement Honor Role.

As the only statewide race on the ballot April 4, 2017 the contest for Wisconsin superintendent of public instruction has received more attention than usual.

Current Superintendent Tony Evers is running for his third term as head of the state Department of Public Instruction and is facing Dr. Lowell Holtz, former district superintendent for the School District of Beloit and the Whitnall School District southwest of Milwaukee.

Voters head to the polls April 4, 2017, for the spring election, which features local races for city, village and town boards as well as local school boards.

WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- Dr. Lowell Holtz received his bachelor’s degree at Concordia University and a master’s from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The retired Holtz, 59, has more than 30 years of experience in education, including roles as a teacher, principal and district administrator, working in the Cambridge, Peshtigo, Palmyra-Eagle, Beloit and Whitnall school districts.

Holtz responded to these submitted questions:

WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- Incumbent Wisconsin Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Evers earned his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Evers, 65, has more than three decades of experience in education, serving as a teacher, media coordinator, principal and school district administrator working in the Tomah, Oakfield and Verona school districts.

He also served as Cooperative Educational Service Agency administrator and deputy state superintendent.
