Anglers warm up to spring fishing

WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- Fish stories don’t necessarily require catching fish. But many anglers across the Stateline will begin pursuit of the latter in order to tell the former as Wisconsin’s inland fishing season starts Saturday, May 6.

Veteran guide Dave Duwe said opening weekend is like Christmas for fishing enthusiasts. And as a gift, he and other experts offer their best tips and locations for filling a live well or stringer while creating more memories.

WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- Delavan Mayor Mel Nieuwenhuis knew he only had 30 seconds in front of the camera to make a good impression of his city.

So, like the punch line in the old joke about how someone gets to Carnegie Hall, he practiced.

Nieuwenhuis was among the Delavan residents filmed last summer for an episode of the Milwaukee Public Television program, “Around the Corner with John McGivern,” which will be broadcast Thursday, Feb. 16.

Kite-flying teams gather in Delavan

WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- When someone says, “Go fly a kite,” most people don’t think of heading out to the lake during the winter.

But that is what will happen in Delavan during the annual Sky Circus on Ice held Friday through Sunday, Feb. 17 through Feb. 19, at Lake Lawn Resort.

Festivities will kick off about 10 a.m. Feb. 18 and Feb. 19 with a grand launch ceremony.

WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- More than 1,000 classic cars, show trucks, motorcycles and special interest vehicles are expected to converge on the shores of Delavan Lake on Sunday, July 10, when The Cars Time Forgot car show takes over the grounds of Lake Lawn Resort in Delavan.

A special appearance by The Batmobile is one of the highlights. The caped crusader’s most famous mode of transportation is made possible by the Volo Auto Museum and the Delavan-Delavan Lake Area Chamber of Commerce.

WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- Connor Doran will demonstrate that he’s got the talent for indoor kite flying when he returns to Delavan next weekend.

Doran, 23, will be performing at Sky Circus on Ice, set for Friday through Sunday, Feb. 12 through Feb. 14, at Lake Lawn Resort in Delavan. Doran is scheduled to perform at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Sunday in the Great Room of the resort. Each performance will last about 45 minutes.

WALWORTH COUNTY SUNDAY -- The $3 million residence for sale on South Shore Drive in Delavan is a 10,000-square foot house with 120 feet of frontage along Delavan Lake.

The home features six fireplaces, a gourmet kitchen, first- and second-floor laundry rooms, a billiard room, theater room, wet bar, full beauty salon, a great room with soaring ceilings and an exercise room just off the first floor master bedroom suite.

There is a separate, 300-square-foot enclosed screened porch overlooking the lake, an attached three-car and a detached two-car garage as well as a boat shed. There’s even an optional gatehouse -- designed by Frank Lloyd Wright -- available for an additional $260,000.

The home was once part of a large estate owned by the late Edward Brennan, who was the CEO of Sears, Roebuck and Co. Brennan is just one in a long list of tycoons, business magnates and families with names like Borg or Wrigley who have been drawn to lakeside summer homes in the Delavan and Lake Geneva areas for more than 100 years.

DELAVAN TOWNSHIP -- A 49-year-old St. Charles, Illinois man drown Sunday, Aug. 2, 2015, after police say he jumped into the water trying to retrieve fishing tackle on Delavan Lake.

Police were called about 1:45 p.m. for a report that the victim had jumped into the water without a floatation device, according to Fox6 TV.

After a few minutes, the victim began showing signs of distress, and the victim’s brother-in-law jumped into the water to assist him, according to a Town of Delavan Police Department news release.

The victim’s brother-in-law became fatigued quickly, and a nearby boat pulled both the victim and his brother-in-law into their boat.

The drowning was the second on Delavan Lake in the past two weeks.

Divers recovered the body of Scot Apel of Arlington Heights, Illinois, at about 9 a.m. Thursday, July 23, 2015.

We was reported missing by friends the night before after police say he left a boat to swim.
