Our heritage comes alive at Beckman Mill

BELOIT -- People can take a step back in time this weekend and learn what life was like living near a mill about a hundred years ago.

Friends of Beckman Mill will host Heritage Day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, 2016 at Beckman Mill County Park, 11600 County Highway H west of Beloit. Heritage Day has been held for at least 20 years, said Sheri Disrud, member of Friends of Beckman Mill.

Putting winter weather in perspective

JANESVILLE MESSENGER --  Other than the snowstorm that quickly moved through the area last month, the weather of late has been anything but winterlike.

That’s been no surprise to John Frye, associate geography professor at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, who said a strong El Niño weather system is enveloping the northern states this winter.

NEWARK TOWNSHIP -- Never underestimate the power of a volunteer.

For nearly two decades, countless visitors, from seniors to school groups, have toured the grounds of the 50-acre park to see what Friends of Beckman Mill volunteers have wrought, including an 1840s-era cooperage, a dam and mill pond, a fish ladder, a foot bridge, saw mill display, blacksmith shop, nature trails -- and the crown jewel, an authentically restored 1868 grist mill.

On Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 26, 2015 and Sept. 27, 2015, the Friends of Beckman Mill will mark its 25th anniversary with a celebration in Beckman Mill Park, located six miles west of Beloit and planted in the footprint of a mill that’s almost a century and a half old.
