This president makes enemies of all who disagree with him. Since 1975 our allies have met in G7 conferences to reach agreement on policies that mutually benefit all. President Donald Trump now refuses to work cooperatively with our allies and responds with insults and name calling when they do not roll over and accept his demands.
Trump governs by fear and division. Trump is creating dangerous divisions among the American people because of the attitude that there can be no honest difference of opinion with him. He abuses his power to blatantly lie, denigrate the press and to place himself above the law and presidential norms of conduct. Either you must follow Trump blindly, not daring to express any doubts or disagreements about his actions, or you are an enemy to be held in contempt.
Recalling Edward R. Murrow’s words, “We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty. We must remember always that accusation is not proof and that conviction depends upon evidence and the process of law.
“We will not be driven by fear into an age of unreason. ... (W)e are not descended from fearful men — not from men who feared to write, to speak, to associate and to defend causes that were, for the moment, unpopular.”
We must return to the American belief in decency and justice and the value of individual liberty to carry us through to better days.
