True patriots put democracy over party

Written by  Staff Writer

To the editor,
Where are America’s patriots? I first want to acknowledge how proud I am of the few patriots (Republicans and Democrats) who have come forward in defense of democracy over party. Patriots challenge and question those leaders who wield un-democratic power. Some say President Trump wields that type of power. This un-checked power is dangerous to our democracy and our children’s future.

Senators John McCain, Bob Corker, Jeff Flake, Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, Thom Tillis, Ben Sass, Angus King and Bernie Sanders are true patriots. The above group of patriots individually have stood up to, spoken against and criticized the current Trump administration when it has acted in an autocratic manner.

I must state the obvious: Rep. Paul Ryan (Republican) is not listed in my list of patriots who have put democracy over party. I am not naive to believe that the person who is third in line to be president and who is the Republican speaker of the House of Representatives is not influenced by politics. I understand this. But what I do not understand is why some patriots can speak up for us, the people, in this democracy, and as of today, Ryan has not.

True leaders lead their followers/constituents. True leaders disagree with others when they feel they are right. True leaders take the risk to be on the right side of history. True leaders think of others and lead by our “better angels.”

The residents of the 1st Congressional District in southeastern Wisconsin have two questions to ask: Where are other patriots? Is Rep. Paul Ryan a true patriot?
I think not.
