Make the most of winter’s short days and long days by bundling up for a night hike. A handful of candlelight treks are stepping off soon in the Stateline area:

  • Candlelight Hike at Big Hill Park, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, at Big Hill Park, 1201 W. Big Hill Road, Beloit. The Welty Environmental Center hosts a hike in the park, where adventurers might hear from owls or other creatures. The hike is followed by music, hot chocolate, hot cider and cookies.

  • Moonlight/Candlelight Hike, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Storrs Lake Wildlife Area, one mile east of Milton on East Storrs Lake Road. Members of the Rock County chapter of the Ice Age Trail Alliance lead the way. A bonfire with marshmallows and hot chocolate follows the hike.
  • Wander at the Wetland, full moon snowshoe and hike, 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, at Nygren Wetland Preserve, 3190 W. Rockton Road, Rockton, Illinois. Free family event. Luminaries guide the way for hiking, snowshoeing or skiing. Two bonfires will be blazing for an after-hike warmup.
