Butter Cookie Cutouts

Butter cookies are a favorite for many. Put frosting on them, and you have a combination that makes for an irresistible treat.

1 cup white sugar
1 cup butter
3 egg yolks
3 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda (add to flour)
2 teaspoons cream of tartar (add to flour)
1/4 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla

Cream together sugar and butter until the consistency of a smooth paste. Add egg yolks and mix thoroughly. Add flour with baking soda and cream of tartar and stir well. Add milk and vanilla. Stir mixture until everything is well mixed. Chill dough for 30 minutes.

Take out a portion of dough about the size of a baseball and roll out to 1/8-inch to 1/4-inch thick. Use cookie cutters to cut out a variety of Christmas shapes.

Arrange on a cookie sheet about 2 inches apart. Bake at 350 degrees until cookies turn slightly brown — approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Cool and frost.

Frosting
3 cups powdered sugar
1/4 cup milk
1/4 cup butter
1 teaspoon vanilla

Heat milk and butter until butter is melted. Slowly add milk and butter mixture to powdered sugar until frosting is the desired consistency. Add vanilla and stir well.

Divide the frosting into portions and add food coloring to the various portions to make your desired colors.

Cookies store well in a covered container.
