Editor’s blog: After 26 years, a new adventure

Written by

You don’t need to read a newspaper to know that our business is evolving constantly.

The nation’s largest and most influential newspapers, such as the New York Times and Washington Post, continually are adjusting to the quickly changing ways that readers consume news.

The same is true with our weekly newspapers here at CSI Media.

Beginning this week, Jenny Sharp has been named editor at CSI Media, directing the news coverage of our three papers: Walworth County Sunday, the Stateline News and the Janesville Messenger.

It’s no small undertaking. For example, our combined Sunday circulation is pushing 100,000, making it one of the largest Sunday papers in our two-state market. We also publish Wednesday editions each week.

I will be moving on to Channel 27 TV in Madison to manage its online news coverage and social media efforts.

The move wraps up my 26 year career with Bliss communications newspapers.

My first job with the company was as a part-time photojournalist with the Gazette, which eventually landed me a full-time staff photographer postition in Walworth County with what then was known as The Week.

I served as editor after a few years, and have continued in a variety of roles following the merger in 2008 with CSI Media.

As any journalist will tell you, it’s the people that make the job interesting and satisfying year after year.

I’m always grateful to those who have opened up to share a few moments of their lives with us.

Now it’s Sharp’s turn to to put her stamp on the papers’ coverage. She has a good sense of how to cover local news, people and events that are unique in our markets. In addition to overseeing all aspects of news coverage, she will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of Walworth County Sunday as well as the opinion pages of all three publications.

Sharp lives in Elkhorn and has served as editor of the Elkhorn Independent along with two stints as copy editor at The Freeman in Waukesha. She came to CSI Media in 2009 as a staff writer but was promoted to associate editor a week later following a staff departure and now takes over the leadership position in the newsroom.

She will be surrounded by a familiar and talented team.

Senior Editor Lynn Greene, who lives and grew up in Walworth County, will continue to write her popular weekly column, Lynn’s Place. She also will continue to direct our entertainment coverage and oversee a variety of special sections that we produce each year.

Todd Mishler, a Janesville resident who has worked in a variety of capacities for our parent Bliss Communications companies, has taken on the role of associate editor and will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Messenger and Stateline News.

Staff writer Margaret Plevak, another Walworth County resident, will spearhead our Walworth County news coverage and take on added responsibilities for our quickly growing social media and digital presence.

Photographer Terry Mayer, a  Darien native, will continue to be responsible for the photo report in all three publications, as well as taking on new responsibilities for our online and social media news platforms.

We also plan to boost our news resources in the Stateline market.

Our papers have seen many changes but have had a long history in our markets. Our loyalty to our readers and to the advertisers who make these free publications possible remains as strong as ever.

In an era of “fake news” accusations and skepticism of the media, community journalism, like the kind we do here, has taken on greater importance in recent years.

But with the continued commitment of the dedicated staff throughout CSI Media, and the commitment of our readers to be engaged with the work that we do, the future looks brighter than ever.
