Special recipe edition: Share the fruits of summer

Written by

As May moves into June, it’s time to think about different ways to use that most perfect fruit of summer -- strawberries.

If you really need a reason to eat strawberries, it is good to know that about eight strawberries will contain more than 100 percent of the recommended dietary allowance of vitamin C.

In addition, strawberries contain a good amount of folic acid (expectant mothers should have 400 micrograms daily), potassium and fiber. Not only that, but these berries are totally fat free.

Most of our nation’s strawberries are grown in California, where the season begins in January and continues through November in parts of the state. In Wisconsin, the peak season is June.

Buy strawberries from your local farmers for the best flavor. Find a pick-your-own strawberry farm and check their hotline or website daily so you’ll know when to pick.
