Mercyhealth CEO’s pay among highest for nonprofits

Written by  CSI Media news

ROCKFORD -- Thousands of top officials at charities, hospitals and colleges in the U.S. received seven-figure salaries in 2014, according to IRS reports analyzed by the Wall Street Journal.

Among the top earners is Javon Bea, president and chief executive of Mercyhealth, who oversaw the merger in 2015 with Rockford Health System.

The compensation for Bea that year was $8 million, which exceeded the pay for chiefs of some far larger hospital chains, according to the newspaper.

It was nearly double that of the CEO of Colorado-based Catholic Health Initiatives hospital system, where operating revenue in fiscal 2015 was about 15 times Mercy’s current revenue.

Mercy told the paper that Bea’s compensation accurately reflects the complexity of his duties overseeing multiple branches and his role in transforming a community hospital into a health system over several decades.
