In victory for opponents, Rockton asphalt plant application withdrawn

Written by  CSI Media news staff

ROCKTON -- Opponents of a proposed asphalt plant in Rockton are claiming victory -- at least for now -- after the company that wanted to build the plant withdrew its request.

Rockford-based Northern Illinois Service Company withdrew the request March 9, 2017, before it was to come before the Winnebago County Board.

The company was seeking a special-use permit and two map amendments to rezone 42 acres along Black’s Quarry at 11200 N. Main St., just outside Rockton’s village limits, according to the Rockford Register Star.

County board member Jim Webster said that if the board had rejected the re-zoning requests and special-use permit, the company would have had to wait a year before submitting another application.

Because the board did not vote, Northern can re-submit its petition at any time and start the months-long rezoning process over again.
