The Town of Turtle Fire Department activated a mutual aid box alarm, and fire crews from Rock County and northern Illinois responded.
By about 1:20 p.m., firefighters had isolated the fire to one corner of the building, said Jason Rowland, a deputy fire chief with the town of Turtle.
Rowland said firefighters were inside the building, but heavy smoke made it difficult to find the source of the fire.
No injuries were reported. All roads into the crossroads town of Tiffany were closed, said Rock County sheriff’s Sgt. Josh Lund.
A Gazette reporter on the scene saw smoke pouring from the doors and other openings in the building. Flames eventually were visible on the west side of the building.
Dayna Hall, a bartender at Bootleggers, said she closed the tavern about 10 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23. She returned to open the business late Friday morning.
"I opened the door, and it (smoke) all came roaring out," Hall told The Gazette.
Officials determined the fire started in the utility room in the basement, according to a Town of Turtle Fire Department news release.
