Latino advocates petition for ID cards in Beloit

Written by  CSI Media news

STATELINE NEWS -- Latino community advocates are asking Beloit officials to consider creating a municipal identification card for those who are unable to obtain a state ID or drivers license.

The group delivered a petition with nearly 200 signatures to the city council, according to WCLO.

League of United Latin American Citizens Chapter 341 President Jasmine Carbajal said some of the people who have trouble obtaining a state ID include the homeless, those who are unable to obtain their birth certificate and undocumented immigrants.

City Manager Lori Curtis Luther said Beloit supports the opportunity for all people to have an official drivers license and will continue to lobby for legislation that will allow this in Wisconsin as 12 other states already have done.

Curtis Luther said Beloit also will continue to research how other communities like Milwaukee are implementing municipal identification cards.
