Used-car buyer suspects odometer roll-back scam PDF Print E-mail

DELAVAN -- An Oconomowoc man suspects a used car he purchased in Delavan had the odometer rolled back, and is urging people to verify a car's mileage before making a deal.

In an e-mail to local media outlets, the buyer explained that the same seller appears to be selling multiple vehicles. He recommends comparing the mileage on the odometer with the mileage listed in a CarFax report.

In his e-mail to Walworth County Sunday, he writes:

"There seems to be a significant operation going on in the Delavan Wisconsin area regarding rolling back of miles on cars.

"I bought a car from an individual on 8/28/2011 and found out when I got home it had the miles rolled back - I talked to my son on the phone when looking at the car and he gave me info off the CarFax but I neglected to ask the miles.

"When I got home and looked myself, I found out - it had 170k plus on the Car Fax, but was advertised with 107k and the odometer was 107k.

"The person who sells these cars is not the person on the title, they are selling for someone else, and all the usual stories. Since Aug. 28 they have posted seven more cars, for a total of eight including mine, using the same phone number, and/or same license plates.

"As soon as one is sold, they bring a new one out.  So eight cars in five weeks is a pretty good operation and I am sure I wasn't the first one scammed, so who knows how long it has been going on.  For me, I bought the car for $2900 and have put in another $2500 plus for it to be in working order, for a total of $5400.
