BLOOMFIELD -- Voters in the town of Bloomfield have had their say, and they've chosen a new beginning. Residents voted overwhelmingly Tuesday 547-146 to approve a referendum to incorporate into a village.
The state must certify the final paperwork, but the 12-square-mile area, located northeast of County Highway H in southeastern Walworth County, for all intents and purposes has become the village of Bloomfield.
About 35 percent of the estimated 2,000 registered voters living in the proposed new village showed up at the polls, approving the measure with an overwhelming 79 percent of the votes.
“We’re very pleased with the overall results, and we’re happy because it was a pretty good turnout,” Incorporation Committee Chairman Doug Mushel said. “That means we got our message across, both the information about incorporation and about the need to get to the polls. That’s tough a lot times when there’s only one item on the ballot.”
Once the incorporation documents are part of state statute, an election for the new village board can be held. In turn, the new board can accept potential annexation requests from landowners in the remaining town, who also can decide to start that process with the city of Lake Geneva or the village of Genoa City.
