BURLINGTON — They say charity begins at home, but what happens when you’re in need of a charitable home away from home? Families whose children face traumatic injury or critical illness often don’t have the money for an extended stay in a location hundreds or thousands of miles away from their home.

That's why a Walworth County woman is helping organize a Stamp Camp for Ronald McDonald House Charities at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 27 in the community room at Peoples Bank, 837 N. Wisconsin St., Elkhorn.

The Trojans’ Breanna Gaspervich repeated as the player of the year and Nate Dodge earned the top honor on the boys’ All-Walworth County team. Both led their teams to the WIAA Division 3 State Tournament.

Volunteer Steve Jannisch delivers coffee while donating his time at Mercy Hospital in Janesville.

Hundreds of them inconspicuously go about their business, finishing tasks large and small, to make other people’s lives a little less burdensome.

They greet people in the parking lot or just inside the front door. Some of them check visitors in or direct them to where they need to go.

Their smiles make a crazy world slow down for a few minutes. Their gifts of a teddy bear help young children forget their fears. And their comforting hands tell patients they’re not alone as they take their final breaths.

National Volunteer Week starts today, and none of these folks are more appreciated than those who give their time and energy at hospitals across southern Wisconsin.
