Count Hibernacula, left, a vampire bat played by Lake Geneva native Emmitt Morgans, tells Batfield, a brown bat played by Megan Kaminsky, about the count’s bat house. The actors are in a Kohl’s Wild Theater play called “The Legend of Hibernacula.” The play is part of a Zoological Society of Milwaukee outreach program. The society offers theater programs free to schools, festivals and community events year-round.
MILWAUKEE -- Emmitt Morgans, almost on a daily basis, struggles to control the animal within. Recent transformations have included Count Hibernacula, a vampire bat.
No, not one reminiscent of Dracula, coffins and old horror flicks. But rather, a character who talks about the important role bats play in the environment and warns of threats to hibernating populations.
Morgans is one of 12 regular actors and actresses at Kohl’s Wild Theater, a branch of the Zoological Society of Milwaukee.

Terry Mayer/Staff Residents along some parts of the Rock River in Roscoe needed boats to get to their flooded homes Monday. Gov. Pat Quinn declared Winnebago County, along with 43 other Illinois counties, disaster areas due to flooding.
ROSCOE — After Gov. Pat Quinn declared Winnebago County a disaster area, residents will be able to get extra help recovering from the floods and high water that has plagued the Rock River the past few weeks.
But that’s little consolation to those who have been forced from their homes because of the high water along the Rock River from Newville in Rock County, Wis., down through Roscoe and Rockton in Illinois.

Terry Mayer/staff Eduardo Corral of Darien studies for the GED test last week at Gateway Technical College in Elkhorn. The test is being updated for 2014, so students are encouraged to finish before the end of the year to avoid losing credit for portions of the test already completed.
ELKHORN — Eduardo Corral is studying academic subjects such as math and science as he prepares for the GED test. But the Darien man and many other GED candidates face an additional challenge — passing the test of time.
A new GED test will go into effect next year, and sections that students have completed for the current test will not transfer to the new test.
