ROCKTON — Rockton farmer Gary Shedd hasn’t planted his corn this late in 35 years.
“Last year, I planted on the 11th of April, but I’ve always planted every year by this time,” Shedd said last week as heavy clouds rolled up behind him. “I could probably plant tomorrow if it doesn’t rain.”
Persistent winter temperatures, late frost and saturated topsoil have been keeping Shedd out of his fields longer than he would have liked.

ROCKTON -- Police are investigating a home invasion May 2 on Favor Road near Rockton.
Investigators say the residents arrived home about 6 p.m. to discover two burglars inside. The burglars attacked the couple who were transported to a Rockford hospital with injuries.
"This is a secluded, rural area obviously" Dep. Chief Dominic Iasparro of the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office told a Rockford TV station. "There's not much traffic so we are making contact with the closest residents as well to see if anybody observed anything."
Investigators described the robbers as black men in the 20s. They may be driving a brown mid-sized car similar to a Pontiac Grand Prix or Grand AM.
The attack was the second home invasion in Winnebago County in a week. A week earlier, police reported a home invasion on Rockford's northwest side. |
