BELOIT — A Beloit resident apparently wanted to take the issue of school security into his own hands Tuesday, but ended up getting arrested instead.
A teacher reported that a man wearing camouflage was at the side entrance of Converse Elementary School trying to forcibly open the doors, according to a school district news release.
The teacher told a kindergarten student to not open the doors, and the teacher reported that she could also hear the man through the door telling the student not to open the door. The teacher then cleared the hallway and notified the front office.
Another staff member approached the man on the sidewalk who said he was only testing the school’s security. Officials believe the man was responding to last week's deadly school shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.
The district’s safety and security coordinator was notified, as well as police, who later arrested the suspect at his address.
Converse Elementary School Principal Stephanie Jacobs had planned to meet with school staff to discuss which actions should be taken as a result of the incident. She said the school might tighten security procedures such as not allowing parents to arrive early to pick up their children.
The doors to all School District of Beloit buildings are locked including the front doors, which are monitored by staff.
