JANESVILLE — Residents along about eight miles of Janesville city streets will be notified soon that they’re on the list in 2013 for new sidewalks. The city council Monday approved 8.4 miles of sidewalks that had been recommended by the Janesville Sidewalk Task Force. SIDEWALK LIST AND MAPS (pdf) I WATCH The council also dropped from the list properties that the committee had recommended for no sidewalks. Still up in the air was a group of sidewalks that the task force forwarded to the council with no recommendation. The council decided to delay until March a decision on those sidewalks. The sidewalks that were approved came from a rating scale developed by the task force. Sidewalks were given higher or lower scores depending on factors such as proximity to schools and bus stops, if the street is an arterial or if the sidewalks would fill in gaps in the current system. The task force is through about half of the sidewalks in the city and expects to forward recommendations to the council in March. Homeowners on the list will receive notice from the city and a Dec. 10 public hearing will be held on the approved sidewalks. Construction will be scheduled beginning in the spring so residents have time to either schedule their own contractor or use the city’s contractor.
