AVALON -- A maintenance shop at Gavilon Grain in Avalon was destroyed Tuesday in a fire that forced residents to evacuate. The Clinton Fire Department was called about 8 p.m. Tuesday to the elevator and worked to extinguish the blaze along with firefighters from Clinton, Evansville, Milton, the town of Beloit, the town of Turtle, Orfordville, Footville and a number of departments from northern Illinois. More photos at Facebook.com/StatelineNews About 20 homes were temporarily evacuated while a railroad car filled with anhydrous ammonia was moved to a safe location. Wisconsin Highway 140, which passes nearby, also was closed for a time. The fire was contained by 10 p.m. Gavilon recently completed the first part of a multimillion-dollar improvement project for the site, according to news reports.
