Today (Feb. 5) was the busiest day of the year for high school senior football players, and that was no different for Stateline area athletes on National Signing Day.
Among them were two of Janesville Craig’s top performers, Tom Gabower and Isiah Berghammer, both honorable mention choices in the Big Eight.
Gabower will play at Hillsdale College in Michigan, while Berghammer will attend Wayne State in Nebraska.
Lake Geneva Badger and East Troy also have players expected to make their commitments official today.
Defensive lineman Josh Doyle has accepted a walk-on opportunity at Northern Illinois, and linebacker Evan Gibson, the team’s leading tackler, is heading to Upper Iowa. They were both all-Southern Lakes first-team defenders.
For the Trojans, tight end Sam Eckert will walk on at Wisconsin, while quarterback Brandon Matz is taking his talents to Dubuque. Both were first-team selections in the Rock Valley North.
Cody McIntire of Elkhorn, a second-team all-SLC blocker, will play at Winona State.
Kicker-punter Ian Gallagher of Walworth Big Foot is a preferred walk-on at three-time defending NCAA Division I-FCS national champion North Dakota State. Gallagher was an all-league choice and honorable mention All-State choice by the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association.
Former Chiefs’ coach Rodney Wedig, who will be taking over the Beloit Memorial program, will watch his son, Gus, head to Minnesota-Duluth after the latter was an All-State linebacker.
Minnesota State (Mankato) is the destination for seven Wisconsin products, including Milton offensive lineman Nate Trewyn, an honorable mention pick in the Badger South.
Two other Red Hawks, Anthany and Zachary Hoard, are heading to Southwest Minnesota State.
Janesville Craig’s Alli Calkins also will sign her letter of intent for track at Minnesota State (Mankato) and was scheduled to participate in the signing event at Craig this afternoon.
